HENCE is gazing out the window at the storm.
He slowly turns to the camera.
HENCE
It was a dark and stormy night
BRIGHT FLASH OF LIGHTNING & THUNDEROUS CRACK OF THUNDER.
Hence slowly walks over to the desk walking with a slight limp.
HENCE (CONT'D)
The thunder was frightening.
Hence takes a few steps to the desk.
HENCE (CONT'D)
The rain was ferocious.
Hence sits down at the desk holding his cane where we can see it.
HENCE (CONT'D)
Not the kind of night YOU would want to go outside.
DIFFERENT ANGLE CLOSE UP
HENCE (CONT'D)
Not the kind of night YOU would want to have a party.
DIFFERENT ANGLE CLOSE UP
HENCE (CONT'D)
Not the kind of night YOU would want to go to a creepy old house.
SLOW ZOOM OF HENCE SITTING AT THE DESK FROM STRAIGHT ON
HENCE (CONT'D)
And NOT the kind of night to go -
As Hence says the next words, he slams the top of his cane on the desk extremely hard with a very loud noise.
AMBER and LIZ
INT. CAR IN THUNDERSTORM - NIGHT
CAR DRIVING IN THUNDERSTORM
A bright white fills our screen with the girl finishing her scream. The light was lightning filling our moving N/D car. The thunder and lightning are relentless. In the car is a 15 year old girl: AMBER. (AMBER is your typical 15 year old with long brown hair and Blue eyes) Amber is sitting in the car next to her mom: LIZ. (LIZ is an unusual character. Caucasian, around 35 years old. She is normal in all aspects except she wears fifties style clothes).
AMBER
(Continues her scream and obviously having a nightmare.)
LIZ is driving and has her hand on Ambers shoulder shaking her awake.
LIZ
Amber, wake up. Wake up honey.
Amber slowly comes out of her deep sleep and shakes it off.
LIZ (CONT'D)
Amber, are you okay honey?
AMBER
It's this fricken storm. I hate it.
(beat)
Mom, why are you going to a party on such a dark and stormy night?
BRIGHT FLASH OF LIGHTNING & THUNDEROUS CRACK OF THUNDER..
LIZ
Amber, I'm not going to a party, you're baby sitting for Aunt Melanie tonight! She's going to a party.
BRIGHT FLASH OF LIGHTNING & THUNDEROUS CRACK OF THUNDER..
AMBER
Why is Aunt Melanie going to a party and why am I baby sitting for Aunt Melanie on a dark and stormy night?
BRIGHT FLASH OF LIGHTNING & THUNDEROUS CRACK OF THUNDER..
Amber looks out the car window at the lightning.
AMBER (CONT'D)
Get over it...
BRIGHT FLASH OF LIGHTNING & THUNDEROUS CRACK OF THUNDER.
LIZ
I guess she's been planning this party for, like, 3 weeks.
AMBER gives her mom a cold stare...
AMBER
And I'm baby sitting some brat?! Why me?
LIZ
Amber, Aunt Melanie is on welfare, so, she can't afford a normal baby sitter. And besides, she's your favorite Aunt.
AMBER gives a look to her mom like "As If"!
AMBER
Normal! What am I? Mom, I don't even know what Aunt Melanie looks like.
MELANIE
MELANIE
Hi guys, boy am I glad you're here. I certainly would not want to baby sit on such a dark and stormy night.
BRIGHT FLASH OF LIGHTNING & THUNDEROUS CRACK OF THUNDER.
Melanie looks up at the sky.
MELANIE (CONT'D)
Wow, this is one heck of a storm!
Melanie looks at AMBER
MELANIE (CONT'D)
Oh my! It's been sooo long. You must be Cynthia!
Before Amber has a chance to say anything.
MELANIE (CONT'D)
Well, come on in and I'll get Kennin.
CUT TO:
SCENE 11
INT. MELANIE'S HOUSE DOORWAY - CONTINUOUS
AMBER AND LIZ WALK IN THE HOUSE FOYER
PROPS: A wood box is sitting next to the door with a sign on it "UMBRELLAS AND BATS" and is filled with umbrellas and bats.
As they walk in we see KENNIN in the living room wearing ear buds and rocking out to his music. KENNIN is a 13 year old black boy. Kennin likes to irritate everyone he comes in contact with by being obnoxious.
MELANIE
Kennin, Cynthia's here to stay with you while I go Party!
Kennin does not hear anything because he has his headphones loud. Amber is frustrated and quickly says:
AMBER
It's Amber, Not Cynthia...
Melanie looks at Amber.
MELANIE
I know it's been a long time, but it's Kennin, not Amber - sweetie. I know you guys will have a wonderful time!
AMBER
(under her breath)
Yeah, right
Melanie looks over at Kennin.
MELANIE
Kennin, have fun. I'll see you later!
Kennin did not hear a word Melanie said and he is unaware that anyone is even in the house. Amber gives a look of despair.
MELANIE (CONT'D)
Well, I gotta go before they drink everything up. I don't know how I'm going to find this place on such a dark and stormy night.
KEANIN
KENNIN
Where's mom?
AMBER
Like I'm suppose to know thattoo! Why am I even baby sitting you? How old are you?
KENNIN
I'm 13, what's it to you?
AMBER
13, and you need a baby sitter?!
KENNIN
My mom doesn't trust me because the dog caught on fire.
AMBER
You have a dog?
KENNIN
Not no more.
Amber gives Kennin a look of "I'm so sure", then, We hear a scream coming from outside in the distance, Amber and Kennin look in the yard and then at each other, then the wind slams the door hard.
KENNIN (CONT'D)
What the F...
AMBER
Kennin, call the Police!
Kennin reaches in his pocket, takes his cell phone out and looks at it.
AMBER (CONT'D)
Hurry!
KENNIN
The battery is dead.
GEORGE
GEORGE - THE GAS MASK GUY
Kennin, don't open it. Seriously, don't open that box!
Suspense builds as Kennin slowly examines the box. He puts the box up to his ear and hears a low grumbling sound. It startles him and he drops the box. Our suspense ends abruptly.
GEORGE - THE GAS MASK GUY (CONT'D)
Kennin, move away from the box very slowly.
Kennin thinks this is bullshit and grabs the box off the floor and holds it firmly in his hands.
AMBER
Kennin, stop! He told you to leave it alone!
Kennin brushes her off and examines the box very carefully as our suspense builds again. Kennin very cautiously starts to open the box. Our suspense builds even more.
And very slowly opens it.
AMBER (CONT'D)
Stop, Kennin stop. Put the box down
SIMULTANEOUSLY SPOKEN
GEORGE - THE GAS MASK GUY
You don't know what you're doing! Stop!
Tension builds as Kennin opens the box all the way as he peers in to the box. Kennin is just starring in the box and we have complete silence.
KENNIN
See, nothing, it was stupid. There's nothing in the box.
Kennin continues to examine the box. As he peers in the box, he notices something on the bottom inside of it.
KENNIN (CONT'D)
Wait a minute, there IS something here.
GEORGE - THE GAS MASK GUY
Alright Kennin, let me have the box and stop what you're doing...
POV INSIDE THE BOX
Our suspense grows as Kennin pry's the bottom of the box out and reveals a very small button.
KENNIN
OMG, there's button in this.
GEORGE - THE GAS MASK GUY
Give me the box! Don't press that button. Whatever you do, DON'T press the button!
